Guest Speaker, Ken Wiig, Second Wind Fund, Sep 12, 2017
“Helping Children & Youth at Risk of Suicide”: www.thesecondwindfund.org

Ken Wiig, Board of Director for the Second Wind Fund, along with Chris Weiss, Development Director, were our special guest speakers on this day of Sep 12, 2017. Second Wind Fund (Second Wind) was founded in 2002 as a community response to four consecutive suicides of teens who attended the same local high school. Mr. Wiig and Mr. Weiss were in attendance to educate our group on the topic of youth suicide, the warning signs, and action for prevention.

Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for youth ages 10 – 19 in Colorado, Colorado being amongst one of the highest in the country. Second Wind’s mission is to decrease these statistics by removing the financial and social barriers to treatment. Second Wind has partnered with more than 217 therapists to provide counseling for crisis situations. The counselors work for a reduced rate, $70.00/hour, while fundraising covers the sessions. Per Chris Weiss, “approximate cost to save a life is $1000.00.” At $70.00 per session, x 12 sessions, counselors are able to schedule within a week for a person in need.

Warning signs to watch for are talk of suicide or death, a sense of not belonging, feeling like a failure, social isolation, feeling depressed, previous attempts, history of suicide with friends or family, drastic changes in behavior, loss of interest in activities, giving away of prized possessions, impulsive behavior, humiliation or discipline crisis, chronic irritability and agitation, recent severe loss, mental illness, and alcohol or drug abuse. If you are aware of any of these risk factors and warning signs, take action and get help. In an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. If you have concerns, “Ask, Listen, Encourage help, Tell them you care, and Don’t keep it a secret.”
